GRIMM’S FAIRY TALES
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham
Translated by Mrs. Edgar Lucas
Published by Constable & Company 1909
£265
First trade edition, small quarto,(25.5x20x7.5cm), xv/325pp.,original pictorial cloth boards, slightly scuffed on lower board, with red leather spine, gold tooled, 40 coloured plates with printed protective tissues (2 tissues missing), black & white illustrations in the text, original pictorial endpapers, very slight browning on a few pages but a good clean copy.
Rackham notes in his preface to this edition that he reworked many of the black and white illustrations from the 1900 edition in colour and added 8 entirely new pictures including the frontispiece. He also improved the black and white illustrations in the text.
There are many illustrators of these tales but perhaps Rackham and the Brothers Grimm were made for each other. A delight for all daughters and for all sons of daughters. (I think that covers everyone).
